Our History

The Lakewood Educational Foundation was officially established in April of 2003 after more than a year of study, discussion and groundwork. Initial inquiries into the work and benefits of having a local educational foundation were conducted by a marketing committee for the Lakewood school board. Once interested citizens of the school district formed the first Board of Directors, the Lakewood Educational Foundation (LEF) was established as an independent 501(c)(3) organization. The LEF board decided soon thereafter to create an endowment fund to be held and managed by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation (GRCF). The organization also maintains an activity fund account with a local bank to supplement grant funding and to cover minimal operating expenses.

Founded in 2003, our educational foundation has steadfastly dedicated itself to enhancing the quality of education by providing robust support to teachers and ensuring students have the essential tools for success. Recognizing the pivotal role teachers play in shaping future generations, the foundation offers grants and resources to help educators innovate and excel in their classrooms.

In addition to supporting teachers, the foundation is deeply committed to addressing the diverse needs of students by facilitating the purchase of critical educational items. From basic school supplies and textbooks to advanced technological tools and extracurricular equipment, our efforts ensure that no student is left behind due to financial constraints. By partnering with community members, local businesses, and other organizations, we work tirelessly to bridge the resource gap, providing students with the opportunities they need to thrive. Our foundation believes that when students have the necessary resources, they can unlock their full potential, paving the way for a brighter future and a more equitable society.
